Acorn Holdings wins the Pioneer Green Bond Award at 5th Annual CBI Awards – 7th July 2020

In July 2020, Acorn Holdings was recognised at the 5th Annual CBI Green Bond Pioneer Awards for successfully issuing and listing in Nairobi and London the first green bond in Kenya in January 2020. The Green Bond Pioneer Awards are the premier international recognition of best practice and innovation in green finance, encompassing green bonds, loans and sukuk, and significant market developments in climate and transition-based investment.

Acorn Holdings becomes the first Green Bond issuer in Kenya and cross-lists at the London Stock Exchange – 20th January 2020

In January 2020, Acorn Holdings cross-listed its KES 4.3 billion green bond programme on the International Securities Market (ISM) of London Stock Exchange. The occasion was graced by H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta. Also in attendance were; Rt. Hon. Alok Sharma, UK Secretary of State for International Development; Edward Kirathe, CEO Acorn Holdings; and David Schwimmer, CEO of London Stock Exchange Group, who came together to celebrate the bond programme listing and open London’s markets for trading on that day.

Acorn Holdings becomes the first Green Bond issuer in Kenya to list at the Nairobi Securities Exchange – 13th January 2020

In January 2020, Acorn Holdings became the first company in Kenya to list East Africa’s first Green Bond programme on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). The medium-term note programme that raised KES 4.3 billion in October 2019 will be used to finance the construction of up to six green-certified student properties, to create clean, safe and affordable accommodation for 5,000 students in Nairobi. Among the guests at the bell ringing ceremony were; Sam Kimani, NSE Chairman, and Rt. Hon. Alok Sharma, UK Secretary of State for International Development.

In January 2020, Rt. Hon. Alok Sharma, UK Secretary of State for International Development visited our Qwetu WilsonView property; the newest addition to the Qwetu Student Residences family. This visit came after the bell ringing ceremony that saw the listing of East Africa’s first Green Bond programme on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). On 15th January 2020, Qwetu WilsonView opened its doors to students.

Acorn Holdings issues the first Green Bond in Kenya – 4th October 2019

In October 2019, GuarantCo, a Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) company, provided investors with a partial credit guarantee to cover 50 percent of principal and interest due under the KES 5 billion note programme that raised KES 4.3 billion. The note programme is the first ever to achieve green certification in Kenya, which ensures it genuinely contributes to reducing carbon emissions. The funds will be used to finance the construction of up to 6 green-certified student properties developed by Acorn Holdings in Nairobi, meeting international green building standards for water, energy and construction materials, and ensuring lower operation costs and a low-carbon impact over the long-term.
